   HISTORY

All these works were destroyed in the Rebellion of 1641. Before the end of the Century the works had restarted. The blast furnaces used at this time were about 1 metre square and about 6 metres high. All these early furnaces were wood charcoal fired. This eventually led to their downfall as all the readily available timber was rapidly used up. This again led to the closure of the Drumshanbo works in 1765 and the Creevelea works in 1768.

It was about this time that the O'Reilly Brothers commenced operations in the area. They were the first people to use coal in the smelting process. They mined the coal in the townland of Seltenaskeagh and obtained the iron-ore in Slieve-an-Ierin (Mountain of Iron).

A number of other mines also started at this time. In one case a Parliamentary Grant was voted to allow the making of roads to a new Colliery, however nothing happened and the Colliery was abandoned. The owner of Kilronan Castle near Keadue owned a mine in Aughabehy, while further down the valley the ArchBishop of Tuam commenced a mine in the townland of Rover. It is worth noting that this mine which commenced operations in the 1790's ceased operations in 1987.
